First of all, my gratitude to the author for taking me to Lake Tahoe during the pandemic that cancelled our annual family gathering at that same stunningly beautiful location. My favorite mountain lake and, instead of a piney summer getaway, a blizzard that conjures long ago memories of being snowed in for a week with toddlers. Thankfully, our biggest “mystery” back then was unlabeled pantry cans and missing puzzle pieces, not a dead body in a snowbank! Leave that dicey dilemma to the always inquisitive, ever resourceful—even if a bit like Bambi on ice—“Flatlander” heroine, Maggie McDonald. A great setup for a mystery that might just be Ms. Feliz’ best yet. Beyond an engaging plot, the author delivers her wonderfully quirky characters, those we know from other books in this series (including the dogs), with delightful new additions. Like Koko the Rococo Mechanic with the garish pink, cherub-dotted, “fanciest garage on the planet,” and the hustling team at Flour Power Bakery that supplies mouth-watering boxes of the comfort food we always expect in a Maggie mystery. Equally welcome is the author’s impeccable research (avalanche blasting, vintage snow attire, how to safely walk on snow!) and her signature elements of humor, friendship, and warmth—finishing with a delightful recipe for Hot Apple Pie Toddy. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
